- Extreme Adventure at Killarney Provincial Park
August 3, 2020 - August 8, 2020
11:30 am - 2:00 pm
Join us for our Extreme Adventure at Killarney Provincial Park!
This is ICD’s only 2020 Extreme Adventure involving backcountry travel by canoe! Killarney is located just outside of Sudbury, about four and a half hours north of Toronto. We will be canoeing, hiking, and camping together as a group through the Park’s iconic landscape of beautiful lakes and striking granite ridges of the LaCloche mountain chain. Once higher than the Rocky Mountains, this ancient mountain chain is now eroded down to beautifully rounded swaths of exposed white granite characteristic of the Canadian Shield. Here, you will witness the clear blue waters and windswept pines that inspired the Group of Seven and many artists since.
This trip unites adventurous T1Ds as they step outside of their comfort zones, guided by the most experienced leadership team for T1D’s outdoor education in the world. This program is designed for those of us that want to push ourselves and learn what we are truly capable of. Supported by T1D mentors who have the skills to support you, you will learn how to travel effectively, set up camp safely, and cook amazing meals in the woods. Our ICD trip leaders are fully prepared to help with diabetes management during this adventure: carbs, sites, troubleshooting, etc. You will build connections to our supportive T1D community, and stay motivated and inspired with memories of this beautiful location and the new friends you’ve made.
Paddle and portage through a series of lakes and hike to the highest point on Georgian Bay. Killarney is an Ontario gem that offers endless challenges and scenic views. It’s the kind of place you’ll always want to return to. You will be sleeping in tents, cooking over fires and camp stoves, paddling hard, enjoying the fresh air, and photographing wildlife. Each day will present a different set of challenges whether it’s paddling distance, portaging, or challenging terrain. Our ICD leaders can’t wait to show you the constellations and start a wolf howl before heading to bed. With a sea of stars above us in the night, prepared to be lulled to sleep by the hooting of owls and far distant wolf howls. Rest well while you can, because tomorrow’s portage is a steep one!
Since we will be carrying all our supplies on our backs for at least part of this adventure, it is VERY important to pack smart and pack light. We will provide a detailed packing list prior to this event. We are able to support additional needs for backpacks, high-end sleeping bags and head lamps upon request but proper hiking shoes/boots, rain jacket, athletic wear are required. Please reach out so we can help you be prepared for this adventure!
We are all in the same boat (get it?). Come out and feel the support from others who understand what you are going through and will share in this learning experience. Learn something about yourself and connect with other T1Ds who understand the ins and outs of diabetes management. This is a great opportunity to take in picturesque views and discover what you can accomplish with the right support.
