Description: Step out of your comfort zone and onto the West Coast Trail with adventurous type 1’s on one of the most gruelling and rewarding hiking trails in North America.Hiking blisters and bliss accompany some spectacular sights including shipwrecks, sea caves and stunning wildlife. 

There will be 2 separate trips, one for Adults May 4th-May 12th and a Teen hike the following week May 12th- May 20th. Be sure to select the appropriate ticket below when registering.


Adults: May 5th-12th  Teens: May 13th – 20th

Participants should be on Vancouver Island by mid day the day before the hike departs. May 4th for Adults and May 12th for Teens.

Where: Along the West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim National Park. We will be hiking Bamfield to Port Renfrew

What: This 6-7 day rugged trek covers 75km of stunning views of the ocean through rain forested bluffs and incredible sea caves.  You’ll see shipwrecks, sea lions and surf while learning to survive on this historic adventure.

Who: This trip is open to individuals who are type 1 and physically active. ICD has lead this trail for 3 years and lead dozens of hiking programs in similarly challenging terrain. ICD offers support for all individuals with Type 1 no matter if you’re newly diagnosed or well seasoned veteran to either diabetes management or backcountry wilderness. That being said, this program may not be right for everyone. We are happy to assist anyone who is interested to determine if this challenge is right for you. We only have room for 8 individuals per age category, so be sure to register and reserve your spot today. You can buy a full ticket or save your spot with a deposit.

Please note: 

Health Requirements: Must have a good fitness level. Pre-existing knee, foot and back problems are a serious danger (please contact us to review). Diabetes management can be learned on the trail.

Experience Requirements: Backcountry camping and backpacking skills beneficial but can be learned under our experienced staff direction. We prepare all food, group gear, route planning to ensure our group’s success and will consult with all registered participants to ensure readiness and assist with pre-trip preparations as required.  


  • Camping gear: tents, pots and pans, stoves etc. will be provided by ICD
  • Individual gear: sleeping bags CAN be provided by ICD. If you need a sleeping bag, please let us know.
  • Food: Food will be provided. Any dietary restrictions/allergies will be accommodated for.

An official list of required gear will be sent out to participants.
