Join us for our 7th Annual Extreme Adventure on the West Coast Trail!
Step out of your comfort zone and onto the West Coast Trail with some of the most adventurous T1Ds around, on one of the most gruelling hiking trails in North America… and also one of the most rewarding! Since leading the West Coast Trail Extreme Adventure for the first time in 2012, ICD has led over 50 individuals to challenge themselves by completing this incredible trek. This trek follows the iconic West Coast Trail on an 8-day, 75km hiking and backcountry camping expedition along the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island. The trail starts just outside of Bamfield, about 4 hours west of Victoria.
This trip is full of hiking, hiking, hiking and having fun! Cleaning off the mud with a nice splash in a river, ocean or bay may be accompanied by whale sightings, sea caves and sea lions, just to keep us motivated! Suspension bridges over gorgeous gorges, ladders up steep ravines, monstrous fallen trees turned into bridges and stair cases, shipwrecks, and hand-operated cable car crossings serve to help us navigate this trail, which was originally created to help survivors of shipwrecks get home. For the past 40 years, it has been a rare gem of hiking blisters and bliss, attracting people from around the world. We’ll work as a team to get through this awesome adventure and take care of all the equipment, safety precautions and food prep.
Since we will be carrying all our supplies on our backs, it is VERY important to pack small and pack light! This is one of our rare programs where we will not be accepting everyone – this challenge is meant for fit and motivated participants with T1D. We are happy to assist anyone who is interested to sort out if this is the right hike for you, and provide advice on how to prepare to take on this challenge.
We are able to support additional needs for backpacks, high-end sleeping bags and head lamps upon request but proper hiking shoes/boots, rain jacket, athletic wear are required. Please reach out so we can help you be prepared for this adventure!
This program has experienced leaders who are living full lives with type 1 diabetes. They love to mentor and share the skills and habits that have helped them reach their dreams. Our ICD leadership team has led more trips for type 1s than anyone else in the world.

Quote from a previous participant:
“I would not have had the confidence to try this program out if it weren’t for I Challenge Diabetes being there to support me. Along the way I realized I was going to make it – the excitement of completing that trek, the teamwork of our group and the beauty of this legendary trail will stay with me for life!” ~ WCT participant, 2013
