Adults can have fun with ICD too!

Because ICD does so much for youth and families, it is sometimes mistaken that we have no programming for adults. It is a misconception. What makes ICD different is that we do not have age categories that bar people from our organization. We believe that there are a variety of models to benefit the adult community. Some want the opportunity to connect, challenge and explore themselves while others want to share what they have learned, while giving back to our community at the same time. Of course it is fair to do both, even at the same time.

We have had participants of 72 years of age in the same program as a 3 year old and others where adults are able to connect exclusively with just their peers. We classify the first as “all ages” whereas the second will be identified with an age range or minimum. As an example, all ages could enjoy an ICD football clinic with CFL Star John Chick but some examples we recognize need age restrictions like that of ‘drinking and diabetes’ and others warrant it like our Retreat series.

Most frequently our adults only programming will result around an Extreme adventure like hiking on the west coast trail or a retreat like the Whistler Cottage Getaway. These programs can see a wide variety of skills with those who are hardened veterans of the activity who are excited to meet someone who has also developed this skills in addition to managing diabetes. Others might be very green and look to ICD leadership for guidance on where to start! Either way, it is a great way to connect and feels like a vacation from diabetes because for once it will be the norm. Most find it so inspiring they tend to want to spend time with younger type 1s to give back what they may not have received growing up.
